16 Sarawak-Based Organisations Among Finalists for JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award 2025

Kuching – Sixteen companies and organisations from Sarawak have been named finalists in the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia Sustainable Development Award 2025, marking a significant representation from the state in this year’s competition.

The Sarawak-based finalists include Safewater Asia, Yong Yu Resources, JCI Riam, JCI Jalan Tanjung Kidurong, Sibu Municipal Council, ChampSpeak (Champs Education), Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Borsa Food (YourgutBB Kuching), Timuran Kembangan, Kuching Performing Arts Association, Layar Education Development Committee (LEDC), Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak, Persatuan Wind Orchestra Kuching (The Band Lab), Taka Patisserie, The Ranee, and a joint initiative by Nature Resource Solutions (NRS), Kuching Urban Farming (KUF), and MBKS.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni praised the achievements of the finalists during a press conference at the Borneo Cultures Museum. “Being shortlisted is no small feat — it represents months, if not years, of dedication, innovation and purpose-driven action,” he said, highlighting the year’s theme, Local Action, Global Impact, as a call to scale local initiatives for broader transformation.

Dr Hazland noted that Sarawak’s sustainability agenda, including the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, requires the active participation of businesses, civil society, and community leaders. He added that many of the initiatives recognised this year align with the ministry’s long-term vision of a greener and more inclusive Malaysia.

The deputy minister also urged JCI to focus future programmes on megatrends and risks shaping global development, including climate change, economic uncertainty, and potential biological threats.

Other shortlisted finalists from across Malaysia include Pertubuhan Amal Kebajikan En Xin Negeri Sembilan, Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, Mins Studio, Lim and Nyu Dental Surgery, Kiwanis Club of Muar, Stellar Education Group, Universiti Malaya, JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin, Ban Ning Teh Society Malacca, Collaborative Excellence, Wellspring Buildtrade, Gemilang Coachwork, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, and the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation.

From an initial pool of 65 participants, the finalists were selected through a rigorous evaluation process conducted by independent judges. Winners will be announced during the Grand Award Ceremony at the Imperial Hotel Kuching on September 21.

Since its inception in 2017, the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award has recognised businesses and organisations that advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), spotlighting local action that contributes to global progress.
